Bio

Philip Kiefer has written about winemaking after wildfires, Southern prescribed fire culture, and video game storytelling. His work has been published by Sierra Magazine, National Geographic, FiveThirtyEight, Southands Magazine and more.

He learned to fact check at Outside Magazine, where he was an editorial fellow. He covered public health and the pandemic for the Lens, a nonprofit investigative outlet in New Orleans, and worked as a staff writer at Popular Science. He’s been awarded grants from Investigative Reporters and Editors and the Institute for Journalism and Natural Resources.

At various points, he’s also worked at a Smithsonian research center, and as a timber framer. He lives in Burlington, Vermont.
